The collection consists of a variety of materials donated by the author after her induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2010. It consists of manuscripts, correspondence, posters, and many other materials pertaining to her lengthy career. The bulk of the manuscript material document her fictional works in the children and young adult genres, while also highlighting some non-fiction works and poetry collections. Occasional book cover designs and poetry chapbook layouts are also included with the manuscripts. Also included are materials related to Cofer's professional career as a teacher and author, with correspondence, notebooks and journals.

This collection includes clippings, correspondence, genealogical files, articles, notes, interviews, transcripts, photographs, and writings, gathered by Joan Titus, relating to Lillian Smith's life and legacy. The correspondence relates to Laural Falls Camp, South Today, Lillian Smith's publications and events, and letters received by Joan Titus regarding Smith. There are several folders of audience reaction cards from screenings of Miss Smith of Georgia from 1964 and 1966. Also included in this collection are interviews conducted by Joan Titus in March 1962 with Atlanta civic and political leaders, including Ivan Allan, William Hartsfield, Martin Luther King, Jr., Lorimer Douglas Milton, and Reverend Williams Holmes Borders, regarding African American business leaders. Also in March 1962, Titus interviewed Dr. Robert Coles, a child psychiatrist, about the effect of school desegregation on children. Excerpts of the Coles interview were used in Time-Life's radio program "The Children Should be Heard".

The collection consists of papers of Lillian Smith from circa 1920-1980. Part of the collection contains records relating to her involvement with the Laurel Falls Camp for Girls including correspondence, applications for admission, printed material, and scrapbooks. The collection also has correspondence, photographs, and papers of her partner, Paula Snelling; her sister, Esther Smith; and the Barnett family. The audiovisual materials related to this collection are housed in the Walter J. Brown Media Archives.
